The start of the cold season - and with it a sore throat, cough and hoarseness

The approach of the wet season with its colder, darker and more uncomfortable weather goes hand in hand with cold season. The first signs include a scratchy, tickling feeling in the throat, which can develop into an irritating cough at a later stage.

A cough and hoarseness? These are the typical companions of a cold

A sore throat and difficulty swallowing are frequently the first signs of a cold. The symptoms are triggered by cold viruses to which our immune system reacts with increased blood flow to and swelling of the affected areas. The consequence: our mucous membranes in the pharynx and throat are reddened and irritated. As the cold progresses, the vocal cords may also be affected by the inflammation - our voice becomes hoarse. As the progression of a cold can also increasingly affect the lower respiratory tract, a dry, irritable cough can develop, often followed by a phlegmy cough. Many people perceive coughing as a particularly irritating symptom of a cold, but as an irritable cough, it does have a protective function in the early stage of the infection. It shields the lower respiratory tract against penetrating viruses and bacteria. The dry, irritable cough is frequently followed by a so-called productive cough producing mucus, which is transported to the outside by expectoration to remove particles and pathogens.

A dry or phlegmy cough: What to do?

A dry or irritable cough does not produce mucus. During a cold, it is triggered by the irritation of the sensitive mucosa in the respiratory tract. For example Eucabal® as an ointment, a plant-based cough syrup or cold bath for children and adults offer relief for young and old. A phlegmy cough (in this case, Bromuc® akut Hustenlöser (expectorant) or Ambroxol Aristo® Hustensaft) (cough syrup) is helpful) has the function of transporting the viruses and bacteria out of our body together with the mucus. The mucus is usually crystal clear, may be yellowish in the case of inflammation of the lower respiratory tract or greenish in the case of a bacterial infection. If the cough persists for longer than 3-4 weeks, and if you also experience shortness of breath or chest pains and other symptoms such as a fever, fatigue or chills, you should see a doctor.
